I am thrilled to say that this weekend was our last wedding of 2015. As much as I love any cocktail hour, the commitment of attending weddings this season was a bit much. Jordan and I were happy to say goodbye to black tie at Cipriani on Saturday night. Sunday was spent roaming around Brooklyn, drinking beers at The Diamond in Greenpoint for The Brooklyn Mutt Show.  After the winner was crowned, J and I took down two wood oven pizzas at Paulie Gee’s. A perfect end to wedding season.

Week In Review

As an emergency and critical care veterinarian, my hours are less than desirable. Currently I’m working a 7 on/7 off overnight schedule, so I’ve been sleeping a lot during the day. On my off week, it takes me a while to get back to the land of the living (think many naps and an 8pm bedtime). I try to offset my chronic fatigue with trying to maintain a routine on my off days (and buying myself presents). Here are some highlights from my week to keep me feeling semi-normal.

Up North, Eh?

We’ve been on a wedding circuit as of late, which has been both fun and exhausting. I have not had a chill NYC weekend in over two months and it’s starting to feel like I’m just visiting my city in between events (dramatic).

This past weekend, we flew up to Toronto for my friend’s wedding at The Art Gallery of Ontario. I love parties in atypical spaces, and they really nailed it–the wedding was modern and elegant but not stuffy. Drinking cocktails in a museum feels a little illicit. There’s a small part of me that’s like well, what would happen if I just ‘tripped’ and this martini went all over this priceless painting? I almost have to hold myself together in a weird fantastical way.

Anything Scones

I am a major morning person, except for when it comes to fitting in breakfast. I’m usually out the door with coffee and don’t bother to eat anything until lunchtime. However, I do have one fail-safe grab-and-go recipe that works for every season. I call them Anything Scones, because you could literally add any seasonal fruit, herb or chocolate to the recipe and it will never fail you. The scones are always moist, delicious and in my experience go well with bodega coffee and the M15 bus.

Down South

Last weekend, Jordan and I flew down to South Carolina for a friend’s wedding. We’ve always wanted to eat at Husk and may have made a reservation four months ago (worth it). We spent one night in Charleston and then drove down to Seabrook Island. There was a major rental car shortage due to the recent flooding, so we ended up procuring a last minute Zipcar for the weekend after a minor airport panic attack (sorry J).

Well Traveled

I am admittedly not the best traveler. I have minor plane anxiety that I deal with by spending fifty dollars at Hudson News followed by taking a pre-flight Xanax regardless of flight length. After boarding, I immediately plug into the JetBlue TV system and re-watch whatever show is on Bravo. Today I got home from the Club Monaco sample sale (it was a bust) to a surprise belated wedding gift from my cousin. Nothing better to help ease my travel woes than matching personalized Ralph Lauren cashmere travel sets! J and I are flying to South Carolina tomorrow for a wedding and I can’t wait to be travel set twins. I am sure he feels the same.

Bodega Roses

One of the best things about NYC is the abundance of corner bodegas. I still think about the 24/7 grocery store on 9th Street in the East Village near my old apartment that has e v e r  y t h i n g you could ever need. I once counted five different types of almond butter. The bodega situation in Gramercy is not as abundant but is still top notch. Hank and I incorporate a stop at the local corner store for fresh flowers at least once a week. I used to detest ‘bodega roses’ and always ponied up for the hydrangeas instead ($15!) but they would only last three days before wilting. For the past several months I’ve been ignoring my initial aversion and opting for the roses (two dozen for $10, uh deal alert). I’ve really perfected the bodega rose arrangement and it lasts for at least five to seven days. Check out my tips below for making your $10 roses look like they came from the local florist instead of the local bodega.

A Night at the Ballet

Last night Jordan surprised me with tickets to The New York City Ballet. We go about once a season and always look forward to spending the night at Lincoln Center. Spending $16 on a small drink always feels a little extravagant, but sipping it on the balcony of the theater overlooking the plaza before curtain makes the expense all part of the experience. The show was beautiful, just adding to my already normal obsession with ballerinas.

Road Trip

Last weekend my husband and I traveled upstate for a wedding. We love getting out of the city, especially when driving is involved. The whole feeling of the two of us on the open road, shuffling through a 90’s playlist, snacking and having the freedom to pull over at random estate sales is just the best. This trip was especially fun because it brought me back to the Finger Lakes Region in Western New York, where I went to college and graduate school. We hiked, drank an A&W root beer float, and ate the best local donuts ever (no, really). The wedding was under a tent at a local winery and was beautiful. I even managed to convince Jordan to stop at Woodbury Commons on the way home for a quick shop before meeting my parents for dinner to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary.

Watermelon Mint Popsicles

No one likes fall sweater weather more than me, but there is something to be said for random 80 degree days sprinkled into the end of September.

In May, my sister randomly gifted me this classic popsicle mold knowing that I would enjoy a food project, and I’ve been experimenting with it all summer. Surprising dinner guests with a unique, transportable, no-mess dessert is always a great way to end the evening. To capture the end of summer, I decided to make watermelon mint popsicles. This recipe is quick, easy and lasts for weeks in the freezer, allowing you to have a taste of summer well into fall.

Saving Summer Watermelon Mint Popsicles

  • 3 Cups of Seedless Watermelon
  • 1/3 Cup of Agave
  • A Couple Sprigs of Mint (3-4)
  • 1 Lime

Directions

  1. Mix all ingredients in a blender.
  2. Pour into popsicle molds and place wooden sticks about 3/4 of the way in.
  3. Freeze for about 6 hours or overnight.
  4. To remove, place mold under warm water.
